Some Notes on the Exhibition

This exhibition contains paintings made in the last decade. To understand some of the themes and issues in the paintings I have divided them into the following categories.

Environmental issues: These are connected with the rocks in the Deccan, particularly Hyderabad, Andhra. I have been taken up with these monolithic,
gigantic, dramatic structures that are as old as the earth. The dry atmosphere and the wind action has chiseled them and sculpted them into unique monuments to time. I have spent many years observing the Sun, the seasons, the wind and water interplay with these when they have assumed almost magical qualities. Over time most of them have been replaced by houses but my identification with them has remained deep and lasting. This connection has deep links with the way I see my relationship with earth, animate and inanimate objects that take on a sacred mantle for me.

Soul and spirituality: In the mid 90's I had a spiritual crisis of faith when I began to explore the reasons for my being here on this planet and what I was doing with my life, and where I was heading for? During this period I painted the blue canvasses without any preliminary sketching or planning. They are straight from my
unconscious and answer some of the questions I was asking. In the Primal Women I have seen my connection with the archetypal imagery and iconography. These have been taken a step further in the 'Mother Whale' and 'Sacred Stones' and 'The Peace Bird' that has a message for all of us - to live in peace and harmony with our surroundings. The Stone Family is the family we are all a part of.

Landscapes and Nature: As I am a practicing Buddhist meditator, my landscapes and nature studies teach me to observe my environment with love and compassion. I am aware of the transience of the world I live in and take much joy in capturing the awesome beauty and colours that surround me. They are so precious because of their ever changing and impermanent nature.

Figures: My figure paintings are individual and distinctive to me. By painting people in different colours I am adding another dimension that is beyond race and
ethnicity. I do not treat my subjects too seriously as they treat themselves but I observe them with compassion and love although a little whimsically. I hope that this gives the observer an added sense of pleasure when they see these paintings.

Please note all paintings are framed with glass apart from canvasses.
